Grading Policy

Welcome to Marley Middle School
Classroom Procedures
I believe that, together, we can make this a very successful school year for everyone.  Each student is expected to follow these basic rules:
·      Be prepared for class.
(Bring covered textbooks and necessary materials to class each day)
·      Keep the classroom clean.
(Leave no trash on the floor and push your chair in before leaving)
·      Chewing Gum, Candy, or Food is not allowed.
·      Be on time for class, sharpen pencils, quietly get seated and begin the drill.
·      Be courteous and respect yourself and others.
·      Raise you hand for permission to speak.
·      All math work must be done in pencil.  Work in pen will not be accepted.
·      Keep an organized notebook with subject dividers labeled:
Drills
Classwork
Homework
Tests/Quizzes
Resources
·      Show formulas for each problem.
·      Show all steps and work in an organized manner, even when using a calculator.
·      Label answers with correct units (measurements, amounts, etc.).
·      Express fractional answers in lowest terms .
·      Making up missed assignments, classwork, homework, etc. is  YOUR responsibility.
·      Mr. Lease dismisses the class, not the bell.
HOMEWORK
Homework is graded and reviewed in class.  All questions are answered regarding the homework assignment.  Students may correct their mistakes, get the homework paper signed, and return it within 7 days from the original due date for regrading.  Incomplete assignments or assignments where work is not shown must be completed correctly in order to be graded.
Missing homework assignments receive a grade of 0% but may be made up for full credit. (within 7 days from the original due date )
All students should get 100% on their homework papers if they make the corrections.
DRILLS
After each day's drill, we go over the answers at which time students are to take notes so that they may correct their papers after they are graded and returned.  All students should get 100% on their drill papers if they make the corrections.
REMEMBER: Assignments and corrections are due within 7 days from the original due date .
My goal here is to give you every opportunity to do your assignments correctly and get full credit.  This is called "Effort Based Education".  If you put in the "effort" you WILL earn a passing grade.
I do not GIVE grades.  Students are told exactly what they must do to EARN a passing grade.
PARTICIPATION
Participation is a key component to your education and consists of answering and asking questions.  After one participation the grade goes to 70%.  After two participations the grade goes to 90%.  After three participations the grade goes to 100%.
Participation includes not only answering questions in class but also asking questions.
It is your responsibility to ask for help when you do not understand something that is being taught.
CLASSWORK
Classwork means just that.  Complete the assigned classroom assignments.  Classwork MAY NOT be made up.  The grade reflects your effort and work during class time.
QUIZZES
Quizzes are given nearly every week.  If you get an answer wrong on a quiz question, you will have an opportunity to correct your mistake and earn ½ credit back.  This is done by completing an "Error Correction Sheet".  On this sheet you are to show:
·      Where you made your mistake
·      The correct answer showing all the correct steps
·      How you will avoid making the same mistake in the future
·      Parent signature.
Grading
Final grades are based on the following averages:
10%       Homework
10%       Drills
10%       Classwork
20%       Participation
20%       Tests
20%       Quizzes
10%       Benchmark Assessments
The 9-week grade is based on the AACPS grading scale found in the Student Handbook
90 - 100%A
80 - 89%B
70 - 79%C
60 - 69%D
0 -  59%E
Grades are recorded and averaged using this percentage basis.
